Fast Websites on Multiple Devices

For most modern web designers, making a site that is responsive is their primary goal. While such a site can prove problematic in terms of performance, these issues can be easily remedied with just a few simple tweaks. Many responsive websites can experience slow-downs because they essentially load all their HTML elements at once. Images that fail to load, thus slowing up the process of the page loading, can more often than not cause users to give up and access another site after around only 5 seconds…..this is even more common with mobile users. So while being responsive is important, initial performance is also fundamental to your site design.

Here are some basic points to consider and some techniques that will not only allow your site to remain responsive, but also be quick to load.

Images – Obviously we need to include images on to our websites to make them aesthetically appealing….and this will slow down the loading of the site. Also, images that work well on our desktop sites may not look so good on our mobile devices. By using adaptive images you can ensure the pictures loaded are being optimised for the platform the site is being accessed upon.

Text – The appearance and loading of text can look good on some platforms, and totally out of place on others. Using a program such as FitText can help you to resolve this issue as it will automatically update the font size according to the screen size and resolution. This can help immensely with headings, but does not work with the text contained within paragraphs.

Now Is The Time To Optimize – Smart phones and tablets have taken the business world by storm, completely changing how we access the internet and view our online content. More and more people are using their Android and IOS devices as work machines and thus your website has to function effectively on them, or you risk losing new customers to your rivals who have websites that are easily accessed on mobile devices.
